The model

Based on the work at the Chair of Gas Supply Systems at the Clausthal University of Technology, a technical network model for the realistic representation of the European gas infrastructure has been continuously developed at the TUB - ER department, which includes the current state of European gas transmission networks down to the element level. This is based on modeling from commercial and freely usable sources such as pipeline plans from gas transmission system operators, with technical attributes also assigned, such as pipeline length, diameter and pipe roughness.

The model network analysis of gas distribution networks is based on the approach of describing the supply task in a highly abstracted form with only a few input variables, while preserving the essential interdependencies between the usual technical parameters (spatial distribution of demand and location of entry points) in network design and the required plant quantity framework to fulfill the supply task. Hereby, different specifications for network dimensioning, required network facilities and resulting network costs can be investigated for the regional variants of gas demand.

The TN scenarios were calculated in 2021. We examine different paths for Germany with the goal of becoming greenhouse gas neutral by 2050. Even though the targets have become more ambitious in the meantime, many insights can be gained from comparing the total of 9 scenarios calculated in high resolution. A special feature of this study is the integrated consideration of electricity and gas grids, as well as the full European resolution on the supply side.
